In de schijven is in een reliëf van cortenstaal en beton telkens een andere voorstelling aangebracht die verwijst naar een stukje van de rijke geschiedenis van dit gebied. Het gebied dat nu Rijswijkbuiten heet is in de loop van de tijd keer op keer met de grond gelijk gemaakt om er vervolgens weer iets nieuws op te bouwen. Zo ook de laatste keer toen de meters tuinbouwkassen moesten wijken voor de nieuwbouwwijk die er nu staat. Dat gegeven fascineerde hem om meer in de geschiedenis te duiken en een relatie te leggen met de wijk zoals die bedoeld is: een groene, duurzame wijk die je het gevoel geeft buiten te wonen. De naam van het kunstwerk is afgeleid van het klooster Sion dat hier ooit stond. Het werk is een soort bedelarmband waarbij de afzonderlijke amuletten elk een eigen beeldverhaal vertellen. De schijven zijn 120 cm in doorsnee en zijn niet hoger dan dat van een putdeksel (text in Dutch only). a mobile art installation that can be used as an exhibition and event space. Planet M rests on a trailer which, during transport, acts as a container for the foldable tent design. This tent design, which when unfolded becomes a circle measuring 12 metres in diameter, consists of aluminium trusses and an inflated PVC tarpaulin, interspersed with LED lighting. The LED lighting in the canopy makes Planet M look like an enormous lampshade. When unfolded, a space measuring more than 100 square meters is created, which is between 2.6 and 4.6 metres in height. It consists of a collection of archaeological finds unearthed in the area around the N241. He meticulously reproduced thirty of these items using coloured concrete. In de minutenwijzer van het geveluurwerk zit een camera verborgen. Deze filmt als het ware de tijd, de cijfers van de klok zijn haaks op de gevel geplaatst en er is er altijd een cijfer of een deel daarvan in beeld samen met de omgeving. Hetzelfde geldt voor het uurwerk op het carillon, een camera is hier geplaatst op de kleine wijzer. Omdat de klok er horizontaal is geplaatst zien we panoramabeelden van de stad samen met de cijfers van de klok. De camerabeelden uit de beide uurwerken zijn binnen in de wachtruimte van het gemeentehuis te zien. They are dotted along a diagonal axis across the entire length of the boulevard. Around each stool are twelve smaller stools that look as if they have been positioned at random. The large stools are made of concrete, and in terms of their proportions are an exact 1:65 scale enlargement of the smaller stools. The smaller stools are made of galvanised steel, and are anchored to the ground. The stools are based on a design by Alvar Aalto. Along one side is a harmonica-like arrangement of panels that alternately point outwards and inwards, creating protruding triangles. This relief measures approximately 2.4 by 24 metres. Street names and numbers have been printed into the concrete on the sloping sides: one side of the triangle bears an address in Limmel, and the other an address in Nazareth. On the opposite wall, which is 24 metres in length and slopes backwards, are flat concrete panels with photographic images attached to them. The images have been pressed into the concrete as graphic reliefs. The wall displays means of transport used on a daily basis by the residents of both districts, such as cars, bicycles, motorbikes, a scooter, a moped, a horse, a pair of shoes and even a set of crutches. Next to each means of transport is a number. For each space, Michiel Kluiters designed a spherical sculpture that reflects the school’s identity, which can be summed up as ‘unity through diversity’. Both sculptures are real eye-catchers that convey a surprising number of meanings, using both words and imagery. The first sculpture is a large, geometric sphere made of numerous reflective surfaces, hanging in the atrium like an alien comet. It visually splits the room into fragments. The sculpture simultaneously brings all the facets together. The second sculpture captures the identity of the school using words. In the old building, a wall displayed a text that declared that it was not the various religious and cultural backgrounds that were the unifying factor between the students, but the fact that they were young. Kluiters adorned this second sculpture with this text. The challenge was to provide the inmates with a view that was as spacious as possible, while preventing them from making potentially dangerous eye contact. Five objects divide the gallery space. Each object repeats the shape of a corner seen from a different angle. The commissioned artwork consists of 3 floating, 'concrete-look' elements in which the name Gymworld is integrated. The total length of the artwork is 14 meters and the highest point (the letter L) is 230cm. The name is however incorporated in the artwork in such a way that at street level it is not readable, only if you look down at the top of the stairs at the main entrance of the building the name is visible. Letterbeeld functions as a meeting place. The loose elements on which one can sit also form a freerunning training environment. Kluiters was inspired by the four sports that will soon be practiced here, how these sports deal with space and use attributes. The design language, rhythm, proportions, movements and distances. Entrance gateAt the entrance to the schoolyard stands a particularly beautifully designed steel entrance gate, in which you can clearly recognize the silhouette of a tree. It is a tree of life, according to the artist a metaphor for the child growing up within school. Not surprisingly, among the abstract tree branches full of leaves, you discover a globe, a book, a backpack and a soccer ball. These elements represent learning and playing. Developing yourself and discovering the world.The entrance gate has a nicely balanced color palette: a green that contrasts with the surroundings with a striking red-brown gritwork behind it. It is also striking that the left part of the entrance gate is more closed than the right part. Where on the left the leaves have been removed, those on the right are actually present in material. This execution makes the entrance gate extra playful. According to the artist, you can see the gate parts as night and day. Together a twenty-four hour period with the moon on the left and the sun on the right as signifiers. The entrance gate has an unusual support: it is exactly centered on a large concrete disc. The disc shows a labyrinth derived from a tree stump with annual rings. The annual rings refer to the cycle of life. The labyrinth as the path of life you walk to eventually, in the middle, arrive at yourself. There you will find a pine cone, a symbol that stands for inner wisdom in various religions. Here, too, extra playfulness has been incorporated into the execution. On the street side, the image on the concrete disc is executed in relief. On the schoolyard side, the image is cut into the concrete. As in the entrance gate, leaves can be seen; as if they just swirled from the tree next to the entrance gate onto the concrete disk. Together, entrance gate and concrete disk form the connection between the school and the neighborhood. They give visitors a nice welcome and at the same time give meaning to the place you are visiting. At the main entrance, Michiel Kluiters' eye fell on the standard corten steel tree grid proposed by the architect. For the top, he designed an energetic play of lines. According to the artist, you can see the line as a long tree branch that forms the letters of the alphabet along the way during the growth process. Between the letters and often even connected to them, you can see different leaves. These leaves connect the tree grid not only to the tree in the middle, but also to the entrance gate and the concrete disc on the other side of the school building. Thus the three elements together are a rich and fitting work of art for De Boemerang. Full of visual elements and symbolic meanings.
